The Teach for Success (T4S) training workshop by Jefsia Elisee

The Competence-Based Approach (CBA) and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) share the common feature of learner-centred teaching, with the only difference being that the latter method seems more successful in helping science teachers to involve learners in the teaching-learning process. Moreover, with the ever-changing demand for workforce qualifications and the apparition of new skills needed, Teachers as the leaders of a new educational strategy should be transformed from those who impart knowledge to those who facilitate learning.

The Teach for Success (T4S) training workshop was organised on the 16th of March 2023 at GHS Poli with the aim of training 30 STEM teachers from the high schools of Poli Faro Division, North Region on 21st-century skills so that they can help their students make sense of the world using science and engineering standards from NGSS. The training was organized into 5 modules as follows:

- Developing and using Models;

- Constructing explanations and designing solutions;

- Engaging in Argument from evidence;

- Analyzing and Interpreting data;

- Using Mathematics and computational thinking.

The workshop had a two-tiered approach: the first was to provide participants with a good theoretical basis from which to approach the issues, and the second was to allow participants to apply this knowledge through practical exercises and group work. Each module contained background documents and PowerPoint presentations to introduce and explain each theme, as well as a detailed bibliography and list of internet resources to assist those interested in acquiring further information on the subject.

The end of the Workshop was devoted to discussions on the need for teacher training and development and how to further scale up and/or adapt the initiative presented during this present workshop. The participants left a note of satisfaction and call for all their wishes that initiatives like this one will be multiplied in the future.
